Maya Art, Architecture, and Monuments

The Maya built one of the most visually distinctive civilizations of the ancient world. Across more than three millennia, from the Middle Preclassic villages of the lowlands to the post-contact cities of highland Guatemala, Maya architects, sculptors, painters, and lapidaries produced an unbroken record of monumental construction, narrative stone carving, polychrome ceramics, and dazzling works in jade, shell, and stucco. Their pyramids still rise above the rainforest canopy; their stelae still stand in public plazas after fourteen centuries; their murals, hidden inside tombs and temples, still glow with mineral pigments. To study Maya art and architecture is to read a civilization through the things it chose to leave behind.

A tradition of stone and stucco

Maya builders worked almost exclusively with limestone, lime plaster, and wood. Metal tools were exceedingly rare — most cutting was done with chert, obsidian, and harder stone hammers — yet the Maya produced corbel-vaulted ranges, soaring roof combs, and ramps of dressed stone block that have survived hurricanes, conquest, and jungle root. The standard construction sequence began at a quarry, where limestone was split along bedding planes using wooden wedges swollen with water. Blocks were hauled, often by human porters along elevated sacbeob causeways, dressed on site, and set in a bed of lime mortar made by burning limestone in kilns and slaking the quicklime.

Inside every great pyramid was a core of rubble and earth, faced with a skin of cut stone and coated in thick lime stucco. This three-part system — rubble core, dressed facing, lime plaster — gave Maya pyramids their characteristic bulk without the cost of true ashlar masonry. The plaster surface was not just decorative: it provided a bright, hygienic, easily repainted skin that the Maya refreshed periodically, sometimes repainting sculpture entirely in new colors to mark a new reign or dedication. Traces of the original paint survive at sites such as Bonampak, Palenque, and the Rosalila temple at Copán.

The most common form of stone used was a soft, fine-grained dolomitic limestone that hardened on exposure and was easy to dress. In the southern highlands, where the geology differs, builders used volcanic tuff and andesite; in the northern Yucatán, a dense, recrystallized lithographic limestone allowed very fine cut-stone veneer work, as in the Puuc region. Each regional school developed its own stone sources, dressing techniques, and aesthetic preferences, but the underlying construction logic remained the same.

Lime plaster is a defining technology of the Maya. The plaster was made by heating limestone to about 850–950°C in a simple updraft kiln, slaking the resulting quicklime in water, and mixing the slaked lime with sand, water, and sometimes crushed shell. The mixture was applied in multiple thin coats, each burnished smooth, and painted with mineral pigments. The same plaster that sealed the masonry of a temple also provided the surface for the painted murals of San Bartolo and Bonampak, and the carved stucco masks that decorate the façades of Late Classic temples. Lime plaster is the medium in which most of Maya monumental art was made, and the technology of its production was a defining element of the tradition.

The vocabulary of Maya architecture

Maya architecture is recognizable across the lowlands by a small set of recurring forms.

  • Radial pyramids with four stairways, usually one on each cardinal side, ascending to a temple superstructure. The most famous example is El Castillo at Chichén Itzá, but the type extends back to the Late Preclassic structures of Tikal and Uaxactún.
  • Twin-temple complexes flanking a non-functional radial pyramid, characteristic of Tikal’s Late Classic period and representing the dual halves of a 365-day Haab year.
  • Acropolis platforms — stepped sub-structures built up over centuries, each new building rising from the rubble of its predecessor.
  • Range buildings with multiple parallel corbel-vaulted chambers, used as palaces, administrative offices, and schools for scribes.
  • E-Group observatories — a low platform on the west side of a plaza paired with a longer north structure and a square tower on the south, aligned to sunrise on the solstices and zenith passages. The archetype is at Uaxactún; related layouts are at Ceibal, Tikal, and dozens of other sites.
  • Ballcourts, typically I-shaped with two parallel masonry benches and sloped playing alleys, capped by stone rings in the Postclassic period. The ballgame is treated in detail in the society overview.
  • Roof combs — vertical decorative superstructures crowning temple roofs, carved with the ruling dynasty’s emblems and pierced with light-and-shadow effects.
  • Sub-structures buried inside larger pyramids, ritually entombed at the heart of later temples. The archetype is the Temple of the Inscriptions at Palenque, built over the tomb of K’inich Janaab’ Pakal.

Sub-structures and the stratigraphy of power

A defining feature of Classic Maya ceremonial centers is the acropolis, a stepped platform that rises from a broad plaza and supports the principal temples of the city. The acropolis is not a single building: it is the cumulative result of generations of construction, each new temple built on top of an earlier one, with the older building preserved in the core of the new. The result is a vertical stratigraphy of buildings, often five or six sub-structures deep, that encodes the history of the city in stone.

The clearest example is the North Acropolis of Tikal, a 120-meter-long platform on the north side of the Great Plaza. The North Acropolis contains more than 100 sub-structures, the earliest dating to the Late Preclassic and the latest to the 9th century CE. Each major building was the tomb of a king, and the platform grew by accretion as each new king built on top of his predecessor’s monument. Excavations by the University of Pennsylvania in the 1960s and 1970s revealed a continuous record of tomb offerings, dedicatory caches, and stela-altar pairs, all preserved in the buried layers of the platform.

A similar pattern is found at Copán, where the Acropolis of the main group preserves more than 30 sub-structures in a complex of platforms, stairs, and temples. The earliest of these is a small Middle Preclassic platform, and the latest is the great 18-Rabbit program of the 8th century. The deep, multi-phase construction of the Copán Acropolis is one of the central sources for our understanding of Copán’s dynastic history, and it is the subject of the long-running Copán Acropolis Archaeological Project of the University of Pennsylvania and the Instituto Hondureño de Antropología e Historia.

A third, more dramatic example is the Temple of the Inscriptions at Palenque, a nine-level pyramid that contains within it the tomb of K’inich Janaab’ Pakal, sealed in 683 CE. The temple was built in eight overlapping construction stages, with each new stage built into the heart of the older one. The full sequence of sub-structures, from the early 7th century to the dedication of the temple in 683 CE, is preserved in the buried fill of the building, and it is the central evidence for the razing-and-rebuilding tradition.

The sub-structure tradition is more than an architectural curiosity. It is a way of binding the new building to the ancestors, of creating a vertical genealogy in stone, and of expressing the legitimacy of the current king by his physical proximity to the bodies of his predecessors. The deeper the sub-structure, the longer the lineage; the more elaborate the razing-and-rebuilding program, the more powerful the dynasty. The sub-structures are the family tombs of the Classic Maya kings, and the platform on which they sit is the family altar.

Public sculpture: stelae, altars, and lintels

The Classic-period Maya (c. 250–900 CE) developed the most sustained tradition of public historical writing in the pre-Columbian Americas. Rulers commissioned stelae — tall, freestanding stone slabs carved in low relief on one or more faces — to mark the end of standard calendrical periods (every 5, 10, or 20 years, called katun endings). A stela almost always carried the image of the king, often in ritual pose, accompanied by a long hieroglyphic text naming him, his parents, his accession, his war exploits, and the period-ending ceremony itself.

The companion to many stelae is a circular, oval, or rectangular altar placed directly in front, usually carved with a figure emerging from a cleft or carrying a bundle. The pairing of a standing stela with a frontal altar is the signature of a Classic Maya dedicatory monument. The tradition appears in the mid-3rd century CE at sites such as Tikal and Copán and reaches its artistic zenith in the late 8th century at Quiriguá and Piedras Negras.

Above doorways, Maya architects set carved wooden or stone lintels. The three surviving wooden lintels of Yaxchilán, now in the British Museum, depict Lady Xoc drawing a thorned rope through her tongue in a bloodletting rite, and are among the masterpieces of Maya narrative art. Lintels also carried glyphic inscriptions and were often the focus of the most refined low-relief carving of a building. Carving technique

The Maya carved stelae, altars, and lintels in low relief, with figures projecting only a few millimeters from the surface. The carving was done with a small toolkit of stone tools: chert hammers for roughing out the form, flint and obsidian blades for fine detail, and rounded polishing stones for the final surface. The carved surface was then stuccoed and painted, with each color laid down separately and the paint bound in a stucco medium.

A few unusual stelae were carved in high relief, with figures projecting several centimeters from the surface. The most dramatic examples are the giant stelae of Quiriguá in the Motagua valley, where the local sandstone is much harder than the limestone of the Petén and allows deeper undercutting. Stela C at Quiriguá, the tallest in the Maya world at 10.6 meters, is carved almost in the round, with the king’s figure fully three-dimensional. The same hard sandstone allowed the carved zoomorphic altars of Quiriguá, in which altars were carved in the form of jaguars, turtles, and toads.

A second distinct carving tradition is the carved stucco of the Late Classic temple superstructures. The temple façades of Ek’ Balam, near the modern town of Temozón in Yucatán, are decorated with round, fleshy stucco figures in almost full relief, surrounding the doorways of the tomb temple of Ukit Kan Lek Tok’. The tradition of carved stucco reaches its most elaborate form at Tulum, on the coast of Quintana Roo, where the small but impressive temples of the Postclassic are decorated with stucco masks of gods and ancestors.

The carved-stucco tradition is closely related to the painted-mural tradition. The same artisans who painted the Bonampak murals also carved the stucco masks of the temple façades, and the same pigments that colored the stucco were also used to paint the murals. The two arts were not separate traditions but parts of a single visual program.

Murals and painted surfaces

Maya murals are rare but spectacular. The earliest come from the Preclassic, when small village centers were decorated with painted lime-plaster walls. At San Bartolo, a small site in the Petén of Guatemala, a mid-1st-millennium BCE building program produced the oldest known Maya murals: a courtly scene of maize gods, a mythic tree, and a procession of richly dressed figures wearing jade and quetzal ornaments.

The Late Classic saw three great mural programs survive into modern times: Bonampak (c. 692 CE), Cacaxtla (central Mexico, c. 700 CE, often considered Maya-influenced or Maya-affiliated), and the riverside palaces of Calakmul and Piedras Negras. Bonampak’s three rooms — labeled rooms 1, 2, and 3 by the 20th-century Guatemalan restorers who first saw them — show in vivid detail the outcome of a war, the bloodletting that preceded it, the music and dance of the victory celebration, and a long procession of lords and captives. Mural techniques involved lime plaster applied in multiple thin coats, polished smooth with stone burnishers, and painted with mineral and organic pigments bound in a stucco medium. Reds came from hematite, blues from the rare mineral maya blue (indigo bonded to palygorskite clay), yellows from limonite, blacks from charcoal and bone, and whites from the lime plaster itself. The same palette was used for the painted stucco masks of temple superstructures, the stelae, and the famous polychrome codex-style vases of the Late Classic.

Polychrome pottery and the rise of the “codex style”

Maya ceramic art is the single most abundant body of material from the ancient world. Surviving examples number in the hundreds of thousands, ranging from utilitarian orange-slipped jars to the most refined cylindrical vases of the Late Classic (c. 600–900 CE). The deepest classification divides them into several major traditions:

  • Monochrome and utilitarian wares, dominated by orange or buff slips, used for cooking, water storage, and serving.
  • Usulután ware of the Late Preclassic, named for the type site in El Salvador, with resist-painted wavy or feathered patterns in black and orange.
  • Plumbate ware of the Early Postclassic, a hard-fired, vitreous, gray-to-orange surface produced only in the Pacific coastal region around Solola and fired at temperatures approaching those of true stoneware. Plumbate circulated across Mesoamerica, reaching central Mexico and the Yucatán.
  • Polychrome traditions of the Late Classic, often subdivided into a black-and-orange “codex style” (named for its resemblance to bark-paper screenfold books) and the “orange-slipped” or “honey-ware” polychromes of the Petexbatun region.

The codex-style vases often carry long hieroglyphic texts that have proven central to deciphering Maya writing. The famous “Princeton Vase” and many cups at the Metropolitan Museum of Art preserve passages naming kings, lineages, and ritual events. The Maya palette and the chemistry of color

The colors of Maya painting are not just decoration; they are a chemistry. The principal pigments used by the Maya were:

  • Red: from hematite (iron oxide, Fe₂O₃), the most common mineral pigment in Mesoamerica. Hematite produces a stable, opaque red that has survived 1,300 years of burial. In some Late Classic uses, cinnabar (mercury sulfide, HgS) was used to produce a brighter, more orange-red. Cinnabar is toxic and was reserved for ritual uses, including the painting of royal bodies and the lining of royal tombs.
  • Yellow: from limonite (hydrated iron oxide) and other yellow ochres. Maya yellow ranges from a pale lemon to a deep ochre. Yellow is associated with the south and with the maize god, and it is prominent in the sun discs of the painted vases.
  • Black: from charcoal, manganese dioxide, and bone black. Black was used for outlines, glyphs, and the bodies of underworld figures. The famous smoke scrolls that emerge from the incense burners of Maya iconography are painted in black or dark gray.
  • White: from the lime plaster itself. The plaster was polished to a high gloss, and the white surface was used as the ground for many murals and the background for many painted vases. The kaolin deposits of the southern Maya area produced a finer white slip that was used for the most refined cream-slipped pottery.
  • Blue: from maya blue, a chemically unusual pigment made by combining indigo dye with a clay mineral called palygorskite and heating the mixture. The result is a stable blue-green compound that does not fade on exposure to light, water, or acids. Maya blue is the signature color of the Late Classic, and it is central to the iconography of Bonampak and the painted vases. The pigment is not known outside Mesoamerica, and the technology of its production was lost after the Spanish conquest.
  • Green: a less common pigment, usually a mix of maya blue and yellow, but sometimes a green earth. Green is associated with the Maize God and with the world tree, and it is prominent in the iconography of the painted codex-style vases.
  • Purple: a rare pigment, made from the murex sea snail of the Pacific coast. Purple is the most expensive color in the Maya palette, and it is reserved for the costumes of kings, queens, and gods in the most elaborate programs.

The Maya also worked extensively with organic pigments that have not survived: the cochineal red of the cochineal insect, the pollen yellow of certain flowers, and the indigo blue of the indigo plant. These were used in body paint, in textile dyeing, and in the preparation of ritual offerings, but they have not survived in the buried record. The chemistry of the surviving pigments is studied by modern archaeological science, including X-ray fluorescence, Raman spectroscopy, and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and the results have greatly refined our understanding of Maya art.

The Postclassic transformation and the end of the tradition

The stela-altar tradition ends abruptly in the southern lowlands in the early 9th century CE, but Maya art did not end. The cities of the northern Yucatán — Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, Mayapán, Tulum — continued to build, and the art of the Postclassic (c. 1100–1521 CE) developed in new directions. The most dramatic shift is the appearance of Toltec and central Mexican iconographic elements: serpent columns, Chacmool figures, Tzompantli skull racks, and warrior reliefs that recall the central Mexican capital of Tula. A second major Postclassic tradition is the Mixteca-Puebla style, which spread across Mesoamerica in the 12th–15th centuries. The Mixteca-Puebla style is recognized by its dense, complex iconography, its emphasis on calendrical divination, and its use of bold black outlines and bright flat colors. The Postclassic Maya codices — the four surviving screenfold books — are painted in this style, and the same style appears on Postclassic ceramics, murals, and codex-style art across Mesoamerica.

A third Postclassic development is the rise of cenote worship at Chichén Itzá and the ritual use of natural sinkholes as entrances to Xibalba. The Cenote of Sacrifice at Chichén Itzá was the destination of mass offerings of human victims, jade, gold, and pottery in the Late Postclassic. The dredging of the cenote by Edward H. Thompson in the early 20th century recovered the largest body of pre-Columbian gold and jade ever found in the Americas.

A fourth Postclassic development is the Book of Chilam Balam tradition. The Books of Chilam Balam are a series of Yucatec Maya texts written in the Latin alphabet after the Spanish conquest, but preserving Pre-Columbian ritual, calendrical, and historical material. They are the single most important source for the religious life of the Late Postclassic Maya, and they preserve prayers, divination almanacs, and mythic accounts that would otherwise be lost. Jade, obsidian, shell, and feathers

Stone tools were utilitarian, but jade was reserved for ritual and elite display. The Maya worked jadeite jade — distinct from the nephrite of East Asia — sourced from the Motagua River valley of highland Guatemala, with major workshops and prehistoric quarries that supplied the region from the Middle Preclassic onward. The Preclassic Olmec had already established a tradition of celts and masks in jade, and Maya elites of the Classic inherited and elaborated it.

Maya lapidaries carved jadeite into earspools, pendants, necklaces, bracelets, masks, and — most impressively — mosaic inlays in which hundreds of tesserae were cut and cemented with copal resin onto wooden or stucco backings. The most famous recovered examples are the dozens of jadeite mosaic disks, masks, and figurines dredged by Edward H. Thompson from the Cenote of Sacrifice at Chichén Itzá between 1904 and 1907. They include a famous disk depicting a face emerging from a serpent’s mouth and a set of plaques depicting warriors with atlatls.

Other prestige materials included:

  • Obsidian for blades, eccentrics, and mirrors, traded across Mesoamerica.
  • Spondylus and other marine shell from the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, worked into tinklers, earspools, and pendant beads.
  • Feathers of the resplendent quetzal, the scarlet macaw, the heron, and other birds, used for headdresses, capes, and standards.
  • Cinnabar and hematite for the red pigment that painted royal bodies and burial furniture.
  • Pyrite and hematite polished as mirrors for scrying and the autosacrifice of kings and queens.
  • Bone and stingray spines for bloodletting, drawn through the tongue, ears, and genitals in rites recorded in stone and on vases.

Iconography: gods, glyphs, and the vision serpent

Maya iconography is a dense, recursive system. Gods are recognizable by their headdress elements, body paint, and associated glyphs. Recurring figures include:

  • Itzamná, the primordial creator and lord of day and night.
  • K’uk’ulkan / Gucumatz, the Feathered Serpent, shared with the central Mexican Quetzalcoatl, treated in detail in K’uk’ulkan the Feathered Serpent.
  • K’inich Ajaw, the Sun God, often depicted as a youth with a large k’in sign in his headdress.
  • The Maize God, whose death and rebirth encoded agricultural renewal and, by extension, royal legitimacy.
  • The Hero Twins of the Popol Vuh, whose ballgame victories in Xibalba, the underworld, shaped the foundations of Classic Maya kingship.
  • The Patron Gods of individual cities, such as the Principal Bird Deity of Tikal or the Storm God of Copán.
  • The Vision Serpent, a flying serpent with a human ancestor or deity emerging from its mouth, conjured by royal bloodletting and the smoking of burning copal. The Vision Serpent is the signature image of the Bonampak murals and the Yaxchilán lintels.

Hieroglyphic inscriptions themselves are an art form. Major monuments combine three kinds of signs: logograms (whole-word signs), syllabograms (consonant-vowel signs used for spelling), and determinatives (silent classifiers). Carved in low relief on stone, painted on pottery, or painted in murals, they form long passages read in paired columns. Cities as art

The great Maya cities were not just collections of buildings; they were themselves works of art. The cities were laid out as cosmological diagrams, with plazas aligned to the cardinal directions, stelae marking the position of the sun on key dates, and the orientation of major temples tied to the rising and setting of planets and stars. The E-Group observatories at Uaxactún, Ceibal, and elsewhere are the clearest example, with platforms aligned to the solstices and the zenith passages, but the principle is much older and more general.

Each city had its own iconographic signature. Tikal’s art is dominated by the Principal Bird Deity, a great supernatural raptor that appears on the stelae, the roof combs, and the painted vases. Copán’s art is dominated by the Storm God and by the lineage portraits of the 18-Rabbit dynasty. Palenque’s art is dominated by the Palenque Triad — three patron gods linked to the dynasty of Pakal — and by the iconography of the cross-group temples. Quiriguá’s art is dominated by the jaguar and by the giant zoomorphic altars of the local sandstone. Bonampak’s art is dominated by the Vision Serpent and by the iconography of royal bloodletting. Each city, in short, developed a distinctive visual program that identified its kings, its gods, and its politics.

The city as a whole was also a work of art. The sacbeob (raised causeways) connected major centers; the plazas were open spaces for public ceremony; the ballcourts were the settings for the ritual ballgame; the palaces were the residences of the king and his court; and the cenotes, caves, and springs were the sources of water and the entrances to Xibalba, the underworld. To walk through a Maya city was to walk through a program of public art, with each building, each stela, each plaza reinforcing the message of the king’s authority and the city’s role in the cosmic order.

Maya art history is divided by major periods and by regional centers, each of which developed distinctive conventions.

Regional schools of carving are well documented. Tikal favored broad, blocky human figures with elaborate headdresses. Copán developed a particularly fine, almost calligraphic style of low relief under the 18-Rabbit dynasty. Palenque is celebrated for its figures set in a thin, almost transparent stucco and for the Palenque Triad of patron gods. Quiriguá has the largest stelae in the Maya world. Bonampak’s painters used a wider color range and smaller, more numerous figures than elsewhere.

Function and meaning

Maya art was not made for its own sake. Stelae were dedicatory, not merely commemorative: their placement in plazas at the end of katun cycles was a calendrical and political act. Murals narrated events whose importance was felt to span the cosmic order. Jades were worn on the body and buried with it, to keep the wearer — even in death — in dialogue with ancestors and gods.

Architecture served two related functions: cosmological diagram and ritual stage. The four-sided pyramid encoded the four cardinal directions; the stairways recalled the shafts of light from the sun, rain, and ancestors; the temple superstructure reproduced, in stone, the house of the god to whom it was dedicated. To ascend a pyramid was to climb out of the human world and into the presence of the supernatural, a transition the Maya ritually enacted on calendar endings, on royal accessions, and on days of warfare and sacrifice. The public spaces of Maya cities — the plazas, the courtyards, the ballcourts, the acropolis platforms — were the settings for major ceremonies. The dedication of a stela, the celebration of a period-ending, the accession of a new king, the conduct of a war, the display of captives, the celebration of victory, and the public sacrifice of human blood were all enacted in the open plazas of Maya cities, in full view of the assembled population. The cities were designed for these events, with broad open spaces, raised platforms for the audience, and temple superstructures for the king and the gods. To stand in a Maya plaza was to stand at the center of the public life of the city.

The private spaces — the inner chambers of temples, the carved tombs beneath the pyramids, the dark recesses of caves and cenotes — were the settings for the most intimate ritual acts: the deposition of offerings, the consultation of oracles, the consultation of ancestors, the receipt of visions, the autosacrifice of blood, and the passage of the soul into the underworld. The Maya distinguished clearly between the public and the private, and the architecture of their cities makes the distinction visible. To enter a temple was to cross from the public plaza into a sacred space, often elevated, often dark, often with a single doorway and a single interior chamber. The private ritual of the king and the public ritual of the city were complementary, and the architecture of the city was designed to make both possible.

The symbolic logic of Maya art and architecture is dense and recursive. Numbers, colors, directions, animals, plants, and gods all carry meaning, and the meanings are layered. A pyramid of nine levels is at once a building, a tomb, a mountain, a representation of the underworld, a body of a god, a calendar in stone, and an axis mundi connecting the human and the divine. To read a Maya pyramid is to read a multi-layered text in stone, and modern scholars are still working out the full extent of the symbolism.

Discovery and study

Most of what is known about Maya art and architecture was recovered in the 19th and 20th centuries. Early travelers such as John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood published vivid descriptions and engravings of Copán, Palenque, and Chichén Itzá in the 1840s. The Carnegie Institution of Washington’s work at Chichén Itzá, Copán, and other sites in the early 20th century brought the monuments into the modern archaeological record. Alfred Maudslay’s 19th-century casts and photographs remain the only record of some monuments since lost to weathering.

Since the 1960s, the pace of decipherment of Maya writing has accelerated dramatically. The phonetic values of the script were worked out by Yuri Knorozov, David Kelley, Tatiana Proskouriakoff, and a generation of epigraphers; today inscriptions can be read directly off monuments, in many cases without recourse to the older 19th-century readings. The result is that most stelae, altars, and lintels can now be translated into modern English, transforming them from mute monuments into primary historical documents.

Looting, repatriation, and the modern trade

The modern fate of Maya art has been complicated by looting. The great carved monuments of the Maya were first appreciated by 19th-century travelers, and a long history of illegal excavation, especially in the early and mid-20th century, has stripped many sites of their finest pieces. The Cenote of Sacrifice at Chichén Itzá was dredged by Edward H. Thompson between 1904 and 1907, with the result that most of the great jades and gold objects recovered ended up in the Peabody Museum at Harvard. The stelae of Machaquilá, San Bartolo, and other remote sites have been cut and sold on the international antiquities market. The LIDAR mapping projects of the 2010s revealed the density of the Maya landscape — thousands of previously unknown structures — but they have also accelerated looting in newly accessible areas.

The response of the international community has been a series of bilateral agreements between the governments of Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Belize, and major museums in the United States and Europe. The 1970 UNESCO Convention, the 1995 UNIDROIT Convention, and the bilateral cultural property agreements signed by the United States with each of the four countries have set the legal framework for the repatriation of looted objects. Several major pieces have been returned, including a long list of stelae, lintels, and ceramic vessels, but the volume of looted material still in private collections is estimated to be in the tens of thousands.

The ethical questions raised by Maya art are not limited to looting. The display of Maya objects in foreign museums, the commercial reproduction of Maya designs, and the use of Maya imagery in popular culture are all contested. The Declaration of the Maya Heritage and Cultural Rights of 2001, signed by representatives of 26 Maya communities, articulates a Maya position on the protection of cultural property. The 2010s saw a series of high-profile cases in which US federal agents seized and returned looted pieces, and the 2010s and 2020s saw a broader discussion of the decolonization of museum collections, with major institutions returning or considering the return of looted material to Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize.
