Preclassic Period — Origins of the Maya
The Preclassic Period (also called the Formative or Pre-Classic) is conventionally dated from roughly 2000 BCE to 250 CE. It is, in many ways, the most important of the great divisions of Maya history: it covers the transition from mobile forager-horticulturalist communities to fully sedentary agricultural villages, the emergence of social hierarchy, the spread of monumental architecture, and the slow elaboration of the religious, artistic, and calendrical traditions that would define the Classic period. By the end of the Preclassic, the Maya world already had a recognizable material culture, a shared symbolic vocabulary, and a calendar capable of recording the passage of time. The Preclassic was also the era of the great triadic pyramids of the central Petén, the elaborate iconography of Izapa, and the first experiments with lowland-Maya writing.

Subdivisions of the Preclassic
Scholars subdivide the Preclassic into four main phases, with the boundaries set by the appearance of new ceramic styles and by changes in settlement patterns and architecture.

Early Preclassic (c. 2000 – 1000 BCE). The earliest permanent villages in the Maya lowlands, with the first widespread use of maize, beans, and squash. The village of Cuello in northern Belize has produced radiocarbon dates in this range, and early-phase occupation at Nakbe in the central Petén is similarly old.

Middle Preclassic (c. 1000 – 400 BCE). The Mamom ceramic horizon (c. 1500 – 1000 BCE) is replaced by the Chicanel sphere (c. 1000 – 400 BCE), and the first large platform mounds appear. This is the era of the rise of El Mirador, Nakbe, Cival, and other great central Petén centers.

Late Preclassic (c. 400 BCE – 200 CE). The apogee of the giant triadic pyramid groups of the Mirador basin, with La Danta, El Tigre, and Los Monos in continuous expansion. The San Bartolo murals are dated to this period, and the Izapan style of carved monuments emerges on the Pacific piedmont.

Terminal Preclassic (c. 200 BCE – 250 CE). Sometimes called the Protoclassic, this is the transitional period during which many of the late Mirador centers collapse, populations shift to the eastern Petén and the Usumacinta basin, and the southern lowland Maya tradition begins to take the form we recognize as Classic.
Origins: from Archaic foragers to village farmers
The roots of the Preclassic lie in the Archaic period, the long pre-ceramic era that stretches back to the end of the Pleistocene. The earliest confirmed evidence for human occupation of the Maya region comes from sites such as Topoxte in the Petén, where stone tools and fiber-tempered sherds date to around 3500 BCE, and from a handful of cave and open-air sites in the highlands and along the Caribbean coast. By the Middle Archaic, the inhabitants of the Maya region were already exploiting a wide range of plants and animals, including some of the wild ancestors of maize, squash, beans, chiles, and the bottle gourd.
The transition to full village life is conventionally dated to the Early Preclassic, when the combination of a more stable Holocene climate and the gradual genetic improvement of maize allowed population densities high enough to support permanent settlements. The milpa system of slash-and-burn cultivation, the staple agricultural technique of the Maya across all subsequent periods, almost certainly took shape in this era. By the Middle Preclassic, villages like Cuello in northern Belize, Colha in the same district, Komchen in northern Yucatán, and Tikal (in its earliest phase) were occupied continuously, with permanent architecture and a material culture that included a wide range of decorated ceramics. Cuello, in particular, has produced some of the best early evidence for a Maya village economy: storage pits, refuse heaps, the foundations of pole-and-thatch houses, the bones of fish and game, and the carbonized remains of maize and other cultigens. A single Cuello midden has yielded thousands of ceramic vessels and tens of thousands of chert flakes, demonstrating that the village was a center of specialized lithic production.
Mamom and Chicanel ceramic spheres
The two ceramic spheres named for type-sites in the central Petén mark the cultural-historical subdivisions of the Middle Preclassic. The Mamom sphere (c. 1500 – 1000 BCE) is known for red-slipped, sometimes unslipped ceramics with broad-line-incised decoration and shapes including hemispherical bowls, tecomates, and tetrapod and effigy vessels. Mamom ceramics are found in well-stratified contexts at Tikal, Nakbe, Cuello, and other central Petén sites. The Chicanel sphere (c. 1000 – 400 BCE) is the diagnostic horizon of the Middle and Late Preclassic central Petén, with thin-walled orange-slipped bowls, polychrome serving vessels, and the gradual development of the pecked-incised and Chicanel-rim decoration that would persist, with modifications, into the Classic period.
Both spheres are also known from contemporaneous sites in the Maya highlands and the Pacific piedmont, with local variants. The fact that the same basic ceramic styles are present across the entire Maya region at roughly the same time is one piece of evidence for the existence of a single lowland-Maya cultural network even in the Middle Preclassic.
Olmec influence and the Middle Formative horizon
The relationship between the Maya and the contemporaneous Olmec civilization of the Gulf Coast has been a topic of debate for more than a century. Olmec-style art and iconography — including the famous were-jaguar and the cleft-headed human — appears at many Preclassic Maya sites, including Nakbe, El Mirador, Cival, Loltún in Yucatán, and Takalik Abaj on the Pacific piedmont. Whether this represents direct Olmec conquest, cultural diffusion, or the Mother Culture tradition (in which the Olmec were simply the most precocious of a much wider Middle Formative cultural world) remains disputed, but the iconographic parallels are unmistakable. Olmec influence is also visible in the Olmec-style cave and spring deposits, in the use of mirror backs of polished iron-ore mirrors, in the first evidence for stelae (carved stone monuments) at Preclassic sites, and in the early practice of caching ceremonial objects such as the famous Nakbe and Cival masks, which were deliberately buried in platform mounds and plazas.
The rise of the central Petén centers
By 600 BCE, the central Petén was home to a network of increasingly large centers, all connected by a system of raised causeways, plazas, and reservoirs. The most famous is El Mirador, located in the Mirador basin of northern Guatemala. By the Late Preclassic, El Mirador covered an area of more than 16 square kilometers and supported a population estimated at more than 100,000. Its great triadic groups — La Danta, El Tigre, Los Monos — are the largest Preclassic structures in the Maya region, and La Danta in particular was one of the largest buildings in the pre-Columbian world.
The central Petén was not just a single great city. Nakbe, Wakna, Xulnal, Cival, La Muerta, and a dozen other sites of the Mirador basin together made up a dense, integrated regional system. Causeways, sometimes 40 meters wide and several kilometers long, connected the sites, and large-scale water-storage reservoirs captured seasonal rainfall. The Cival Project and the Mirador Basin Project have documented the complexity of this regional system and have argued for an early degree of social and political integration that approaches state-level organization. The dense settlement and the substantial infrastructure of the central Petén are a critical piece of context for the Late Classic and its collapse.
Izapa and the Pacific piedmont
The Pacific piedmont of Guatemala and Chiapas is geographically and culturally distinct from the Maya lowlands, and the Izapan style of carved monuments that emerged there in the Middle and Late Preclassic had a huge influence on later lowland Maya art. Izapa, located in the Soconusco region of Chiapas (the Pacific coast plain of modern Mexico), produced more than 250 carved stelae and altars in the centuries around 400 BCE – 100 CE. Many of these depict scenes from creation mythology, including the descent of the Hero Twins into Xibalba (the underworld) and the raising of the maize god from the underworld. Other Late Preclassic sites of the piedmont include Takalik Abaj (with both Olmec-style and Maya-style monuments), Abaj Takalik, Kaminaljuyú in the Valley of Guatemala, and Bilbao in the eastern piedmont. Kaminaljuyú, located on the outskirts of modern Guatemala City, was a major center with hundreds of platform mounds and elaborate water-storage systems; it would remain an important site into the Classic period, when it became a focus of Teotihuacano influence.
Writing, calendars, and the dawn of Maya intellectual life
The earliest confirmed Maya writing comes from the Late Preclassic, with the so-called San Bartolo murals (c. 100 BCE) showing glyph-like signs in narrative scenes, and with the Cascajal block of the central Veracruz coast (c. 1000 – 900 BCE), which is sometimes claimed as a much earlier Mesoamerican text. The Long Count calendar appears in Preclassic contexts at Tres Zapotes and Chiapa de Corzo (with the controversial Chiapa de Corzo Stela 1, sometimes dated as early as 36 BCE, the earliest known Long Count date).
By the Terminal Preclassic and the dawn of the Classic period, the Long Count was being combined with the 260-day Tzolk’in and the 365-day Haab’ to produce precise historical and ritual dates. The San Bartolo murals
The discovery, in 2001, of a small building at San Bartolo (located in the central Petén, near the modern town of San Benito) yielded a set of Preclassic murals that, when fully excavated and consolidated, transformed the field. The murals include processions of figures identified as ancestors, deities, and possibly kings; mythological scenes involving the maize god, water lily monsters, and a figure with a long Preclassic-period glyph block; and possibly the earliest known Maya writing. Dated to c. 100 BCE, the San Bartolo murals demonstrate that the Late Preclassic was already producing art of a sophistication and an iconographic complexity comparable to the Classic period.
San Bartolo is a critical piece of evidence against the older “Olmec mother culture” or “Classic civilization” view, in which the Late Preclassic was a relatively uncomplex precursor to the Classic. Instead, the central Petén of the Middle and Late Preclassic was a region of its own, with its own artistic and religious traditions, even if those traditions influenced and were influenced by the lowland Maya world that followed.
Trade, exchange, and early political economy
Long-distance exchange was already important in the Middle and Late Preclassic. The Olmec heartland of the Gulf Coast supplied cinnabar, iron-ore mirrors, and probably certain items of dress; the Maya lowlands supplied obsidian from the San Martín Jilotepeque (Guatemalan highland) and El Chayal sources, jade from the Motagua valley, and probably marine shell from both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts. The presence of these items in Preclassic caches and burials is one of the keys to reconstructing early Maya exchange networks, which would eventually become the long-distance trade routes of the Classic period. The Preclassic collapse (c. 150 – 250 CE)
The great central Petén centers of the Late Preclassic did not survive into the Classic period. El Mirador, Nakbe, Wakna, and many other large Preclassic sites were abandoned by 150 – 250 CE, and the population of the Mirador basin declined sharply. The reasons are still debated. The most common explanations include: (1) environmental degradation from the very dense Preclassic settlement; (2) climate change, including a series of multi-year droughts and shifts in rainfall; (3) the fragmentation of the central Petén water storage system; and (4) political and social disruption following the failure of the regional system.
Whatever the cause, the result was a demographic shift that moved population and political center from the central Petén to the eastern Petén, the Usumacinta basin, and the Yucatán. The cities of the Early Classic — Tikal, Uaxactún, El Baúl, Copán, Naranjo, Calakmul — were, in their origins, products of this shift. They inherited the Preclassic cultural and religious tradition, but they organized themselves differently and on a different spatial scale. Daily life, religion, and the foundations of Maya culture
A few features of Preclassic daily life are worth highlighting. The maize-planting cycle, the milpa agricultural system, and the basic pattern of village-and-ranch settlement visible at sites like Cuello would continue in use for more than 2,000 years. Bloodletting rituals, including the autosacrifice of kings and elites by drawing cord through the tongue, are visible in the iconography of the Late Preclassic and the Early Classic; the full account of Maya bloodletting and sacrifice is on this site. Caches of ceramic vessels, jade, and worked stone, often placed within platform mounds or beneath plaza floors, are characteristic of Preclassic ritual practice and continue throughout the Classic. By the end of the Preclassic, the basic features of Maya civilization were in place. The Classic period would refine them into the dynastic, calendric, and artistic world of Tikal, Palenque, and Copán, but the foundations were older than any of those cities.
